Tuberculosis (TB) is a debilitating disease that completely weakens the person afflicted with it. TB most often affects the lungs and is the 13th leading cause of death, a total of 1.6 million people died of TB in 2021. Certain health conditions increase the chances for TB in people such as: diabetes, malnourishment, tobacco use, weakened immune system. Poor elderly population are especially vulnerable to TB.
People suffering with TB often require emotional and financial support. But the elderly residing in urban slums abandoned by their family or living alone do not have such support. Although the government is working towards eradication of TB by aiding their medical expenses, a lot still needs to be taken care of.
It is suggested by the medical experts that a proper nutritional diet should be maintained along with the medication prescribed. This is more essential for seniors as their immune systems are not strong enough to quickly recover from the disease and its after effects.
Without regular substantial and independent income, recovering from TB becomes an uphill task for poor and elderly population.
INDIAdonates’ with its on-ground resource partner Dignity Foundation has identified 250 beneficiaries (senior-citizens) residing in the slums of Mumbai who are fighting their battle with TB.
This campaign aims at easing their pain and aiding their recovery process by providing them with nutritional ration kits, which will help them in recovery. The volunteers of the partner NGO will be distributing the ration kits every month for one year.
A lot of elderly abandoned by their family members are living on the edge every day. A contribution of Rs.2200 can provide daily sustenance to one elderly person affected by TB for a month. Even our smallest contribution will help us ease their burden and help them in recovery.
