Summary

We often fear losing our loved ones, yet due to societal stigma, people are forced to abandon their own. When a society fails to understand a concept, it often attributes it to evil spirits or negativity. One such example is mental health; in earlier times, individuals suffering from mental disorders were treated as evil. They endured barbaric treatments such as shock therapy, confinement in solitary rooms, and deprivation of basic human rights.

As society developed, awareness of mental health emerged. However, we still struggle to provide the empathy needed by those experiencing it. Many parts of the world still cling to the notion of possession by evil spirits, subjecting sufferers to torture by supposed saints. Consequently, individuals feel the weight of stigma and eventually abandon their loved ones, leaving them to fend for themselves. These afflicted individuals are often left destitute on the streets, without food, shelter, or clothing. Their identity is reduced to their mental health condition and the stigma deprives them of their social, economic and political rights.

Our on-ground resource partner has curated a special project plan catering to 115 beneficiaries (men and women between 18-60 years) with psychosocial disabilities residing in the shelter homes of the organisation based in Kolkata and in urban poor/ slum communities. INDIAdonates with its on-ground resource partner Iswar Sankalpa is aiming to work towards the betterment of these individuals dealing with psycho-social disabilities.

This campaign aims at:

  •  Providing creative engagement for recovery
  • Aid in the development of psychosocial competencies, boosting self-esteem
  • Imparting life skills for social inclusion
  • Offering vocational training in various trades for sustainable livelihood
  • Contribute towards financial independence and a life of dignity

It is high time now for us to consider our responsibilities towards our people. With your kind support, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of these people and enable them to ensure a sustainable livelihood for themselves as well as provide for their family members.

A one-time contribution of Rs 4800 can help a vulnerable beneficiary live a safe, secure, and dignified life!
