Summary

It is estimated that in our country almost every second elderly person suffers from loneliness and the percentage of people over 60 years of age in the world will increase from 12% to 22% between 2015 and 2050. In India the percentage of elderly is expected to reach 18% by 2036 The plight of the elderly poor in India is becoming progressively more concerning over the last decade. With rural-to-urban migration as well as nuclear family trends, majority of the senior citizens are either living alone or are not well-taken care off. As a result, this is affecting their mental as well as physical state. They are dependent on their children who themselves are struggling to make ends meet for their immediate family. Due to old age and ill-health the elderly have very limited options for making a living. Thereafter, they are even unable to meet most basic requirements, such as food and medicine.

In the past 60 years, the percentage of people who are above 60 years of age in Kerala has shot up from 5.1% to 16.5%, currently the highest share of elderly people in any Indian state.

The elderly population in Kerala is even more dependent on their next generation than the rest of the country. With high migration rate, lack of regular income becomes a severe concern for elderly poor in Rural and Semi-rural Kerala.

To protect and secure the lives of elderly people, INDIAdonates with its Partner-Kottayam Social Service Society aims to address the issues in six panchayats of Kottayam District.

In these six Panchayats, 30 elderly-led households who are the most vulnerable (elderly widows/widowers, differently abled and old persons who don’t have any caregiver) have been identified who are in immediate need of assistance. The campaign will

  1. Distribute nutrition & hygiene kits (dry ration, bathing soap, and detergent) to these 30 elderly-led households to ensure better health status for them.
  2. Provide livelihood opportunities to 30 elderly people through high-tech poultry units.

The Poultry unit comes with a portable cage built three feet above the ground. This is to prevent water logging in the cage. The unit comes with 25 BV380 chicks that start laying eggs within four months. The speciality of these chickens is that they lay eggs throughout the year and from the profit earned more chickens can be bought.

Your contribution will help vulnerable elderly people spend their golden years with dignity.
