Summary

Punjab has been devastated by the flood disaster that occurred in August 2025. It is the worst flood in the state in over three decades (since 1988). The streams of the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers were overwhelmed by heavy rainfall and the excess release of water from dams, leading to catastrophic floods across 23 districts of the state.

In Punjab, according to government officials, the worst-affected districts are Gurdaspur, Firozpur, Fazilka, and Pathankot. INDIAdonates, through its implementing partner Hope Welfare Trust, is actively engaged in rescue and relief operations in these locations. While food and ration supplies have largely been taken care of, ground reports highlight growing concerns over unhygienic conditions, mainly due to the lack of hygiene materials in the affected communities.

However, flood situations accelerate the health risks caused by waterborne diseases, vector-borne illnesses, poor sanitation, and disruptions to basic hygiene. Districts like Gurdaspur, Firozpur, Fazilka, and Pathankot are witnessing:

  • Contaminated water supplies and stagnant floodwaters.
  • Mosquito proliferation and disease threats, prompting door-to-door awareness campaigns and fogging operations.
  • Damaged health infrastructure: loss of medicines, and damage to dispensaries, community health centers, and sub-divisional hospitals.

Through the Punjab Flood Relief project, we provide urgently needed health and hygiene materials to prevent disease outbreaks, support survivors, and strengthen recovery across the most impacted districts.

Target Beneficiaries

  • 1,000 displaced families are residing in relief camps or temporary shelters.
  • Households in low-lying, flood-affected communities in Gurdaspur, Firozpur, Fazilka, and Pathankot.
  • Vulnerable groups: women (including menstrual hygiene needs), children, and the elderly.

Proposed WASH and Hygiene Kit

  • First Aid Kits (bandages, antiseptic, cotton, scissors, paracetamol)
  • Mosquito Repellents (coils, nets)
  • Hand Sanitizers
  • Bathing soap
  • Toothpaste & Toothbrush
  • Sanitary Napkins
  • Towels

Through this WASH and Hygiene Kit distribution, we intend to:

  • Rapidly reduce potential outbreaks (diarrhea, vector-borne diseases).
  • Protect the dignity and well-being of displaced women and girls.
  • Strengthen preventative healthcare in the absence of functioning infrastructure.
  • Amplify resilience and aid equity in the flood response.
