Summary

INDIAdonates is committed to empowering young girls and breaking the cycle of poverty and discrimination. Through our partnership with CINI, we are launching this initiative to provide preventive and right-based education to 150 girls in an unregistered slum near Sealdah station in Kolkata. Your support will help keep these girls in school and provide them with self-defense training to prevent early marriage and other violations of their rights.

Join us in making a difference and supporting the campaign today.

Education in today’s world holds an important position to combat evils like poverty, injustice, and inequality, gender bias etc. An emphasis on education for girls is particularly essential as in our society women especially are often held back through gender-bias and poverty has a direct link to de-prioritization of girl children’s education. For women to be able to break the cycle of poverty and discrimination they have to be empowered to solve their own problems, and it can only be possible through education. CINI, INDIAdonates’ on-ground partner, has been working towards this cause since 1974, ensuring young girls’ formal education so they can reach their full potential by embarking upon a self-reliant adulthood. INDIAdonates along with CINI has launched this campaign for   girl children in Canal West Road which is an unregistered slum near Sealdah station in Kolkata, situated in close proximity to a sewage line. People residing in this community are rag-pickers, vegetable mongers, van pullers etc. Since they belong to extremely low income group even the children are often involved in activities for earning. Adolescent girls, especially, drop out of school and either work in factories as laborers or as domestic helpers to earn a living for their families. There are also high chances of early marriage, elopement and trafficking.

The campaign is aiming to empower 150 girls within the age group of 5-14 years through preventive and right based education and by retaining them in formal education system. The campaign will also avert early marriage, child-trafficking and other child rights violation through education and self-defense classes for the children and sensitization for the parents.

Through this campaign:

  • Girl children who have dropped out of school will be enrolled back
  • Girl children will receive accelerated learning support through ‘home tuitions’ for retention in school
  • Training on life skills and Child Rights will be provided to the girl children to facilitate girls in making informed choices
  • Karate and self-defense classes will be conducted with the girl children to boost their confidence
  • Children Groups will be formed to promote peer-led vigilance
  • Once a month, meetings will be held with parents to sensitize them on the importance of girls’ education
  • The families will be linked to government schemes and services

Your generosity will help these girls live their dreams, strengthen them to fight with the adversities of life and society, empower themselves and provide for their family one day.

We humbly request you to come forward and extend your support to these children in getting a proper education and enable them to create better lives for themselves
