As Mother's Day nears, we celebrate the boundless love and resilience of mothers across India. Yet, behind the flowers and heartfelt cards, many mothers in India face challenges that go unnoticed. At INDIAdonates, we strive to highlight these issues, advocating for change and support where it's most needed. This Mother's Day, let's broaden our understanding and extend our support beyond conventional celebrations, addressing the real struggles that impact maternal well-being in India.

  • Maternal Health

Despite progress in healthcare, maternal mortality remains a critical issue in India. The latest figures show a decline in the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) to 97 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2018-20 from 130 in 2014-16. Despite this improvement, the disparity in healthcare access esp. in rural areas, remains stark. Many complications associated with pregnancy and childbirth are preventable with enhanced medical and prenatal care.

  • Education

Education for mothers goes beyond literacy; it encompasses the knowledge needed to navigate health systems and advocate for oneself and one's family. However, in many parts of India, educational opportunities for women are limited by socio-economic barriers, cultural norms, and the prioritization of male education over female. Increasing educational outreach can empower mothers and directly impact their ability to provide for their children, make informed health choices, and break cycles of poverty. Stories of mothers returning to school to complete their education inspire hope and show the transformative power of education.

  • Financial Independence

Financial independence is crucial for mothers to provide for their children and secure their own well-being. It is not just about survival; it's about dignity and the ability to make choices. In India, many mothers face economic constraints that limit their ability to access healthcare, nutritious food, and educational opportunities for themselves and their children. Recognizing the value of stay-at-home mothers is essential, as their role, though not directly financially rewarded, significantly contributes to the socio-economic fabric. Programs that support skill development and entrepreneurship can help mothers become economically independent, providing a stable environment for their children.

  • Mental Health

Maternal mental health is often a taboo subject in India, with conditions like postpartum depression rarely discussed openly. The lack of support for mental health issues not only affects mothers’ well-being but also impacts their families. It is essential to foster a supportive dialogue around mental health, providing mothers with the resources and help they need without stigma.

The good news is, things are changing. The Indian government is working with organizations like UNICEF and WHO to improve the lives of mothers. Programs like Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram (JSSK) are making a real difference by providing better healthcare for mothers.

Mothers are the backbone of our society. This Mother's Day, let's go beyond the flowers and cards. Let's support initiatives that give them the healthcare, education, and financial security they deserve.
