By Association for Sustainable Community Development (ASSCOD)
Women in our society are often entrusted with all the household chores, they are expected to look after their partner, children and family members. More often than not it is a tedious and tiresome responsibility that continues 24*7. It is also well documented that women’s nutritional food intake is often not adequate due to inherent bias and inaccessibility, especially in impoverished households where resources are limited. In general, women’s health and nutrition are not prioritized. In India this manifests through a high probability of anemia in women and adolescent girls. Anemia is a condition in which one lacks an adequate amount of healthy red blood cells to carry adequate amount of oxygen to your body tissues. Symptoms may include fatigue, skin pallor, shortness of breath, dizziness or a fast heartbeat. India has one of the highest prevalence (53%) of anemia among women (between 15 to 49 years) in the world. Anemia in women affects the health and nutrition status of children as the conditions of anemia are only likely to worsen during pregnancy. In the state of Tamil Nadu especially, 54.8 per cent women aged around 15-49 years and 50.4 per cent of children under 5 years of age are reported to be anemic according to the latest National Family Health Survey.
INDIAdonates with its on-ground partner ASSCOD is working towards reducing and preventing anemia amongst women, especially pregnant women and lactating mothers as well as their children, in Chengalpattu village in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Through this campaign, 160 women and 80 children from resource-poor families with low hemoglobin levels (hemoglobin less than 7) will receive support for one year.
Let us come together and gift these women and their children a healthy life.
