On the morning of Tuesday, 30th July 2024, disaster struck the peaceful hilly regions near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district. A series of catastrophic landslides unleashed unimaginable devastation, claiming the lives of at least 298 people, including 49 innocent children. More than 300 of our fellow citizens are still missing, lost in the chaos of mud and debris that swallowed entire villages (as of 2nd August, 2024).
Mundakai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha—the names of these once-thriving communities now echo with heartbreak and despair. Mundakai and Chooralmala, in particular, have been ravaged beyond recognition. The ground beneath them gave way, leaving behind a barren landscape where homes once stood, where laughter once rang out, and where families once dreamt of a future.
Today, more than 420 families have been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Their homes, farm animals, crops, and life savings—all buried beneath the relentless earth. The loss is not just material; it is the loss of memories, security, and the very foundation of their lives. In the aftermath, relief camps are overflowing with the elderly, pregnant women, children, and the sick—each one of them struggling to hold on to the remnants of hope.
But their fight for survival is far from over. Blocked roads, unstable terrain, and damaged infrastructure have turned rescue operations into a race against time. Access to the hardest-hit areas is nearly impossible, leaving those trapped even more vulnerable. This is Wayanad’s darkest hour, the biggest disaster this land has ever faced.
The path to recovery is steep and fraught with challenges. Families who have lost everything urgently need food, shelter, and clothing. The threat of disease looms large as the camps struggle to provide even basic necessities. Children, who should be preparing for school, now sit in tents, their books and study materials washed away, their futures uncertain.
INDIAdonates, along with our on-ground partner Wayanad Social Service Society is providing immediate relief to 30 most affected and vulnerable families (in total 200 individuals, including 20 infants and 50 children between 2 to 14 years).
In this time of their unimaginable sorrow and loss, we need to come together.
Your smallest contribution can help us provide Immediate Support like Provision of food materials, drinking water, clothing (especially blankets), household utilities, and educational supplies (books, bags, umbrellas, etc.) that would help them survive
Every bit of help—no matter how small—will make a world of difference. We must rebuild not just homes but also the spirit of these resilient people. They need to know that they are not alone, that we stand with them, and that together, we can restore their faith and their lives.
Please join us in this critical mission to provide relief and rebuild the shattered lives in Wayanad. Your support can bring a glimmer of hope to those who have lost everything.
Let us prove once again, that even in the darkest times, humanity shines the brightest!
