Summary

After Vaishali Patel’s husband abandoned her and her 2-year-old son, Utsav, she has been living in the Asalpha slum in Mumbai with her parents, managing both her livelihood and providing full-time support to her child. As her child grew older, she could not afford day-time child care with a meagre income of Rs 4000, neither could she leave her job. Janvi Charitable Trust’s (JCT) pre-primary school, has allowed Vaishali to work and provide a safe education environment for her child.

“When I found out about the pre-primary school near our slum by JCT, I was so relieved. I am so happy that my child will be getting an education in English medium, from an early age. I want to provide everything to him that I did not get, and if he is enrolled in the school, I wouldn’t have to leave the job, while I continue to provide for the household,” says Vaishali.

JCT has been working with marginalized communities in Mumbai for almost 20 years. JCT runs a pre-primary education program for around 75 underprivileged children between the age group of 3 to 6, living in the slums of Asalpha.

While the program provides quality education, safe-environment along with extra-curricular activities, they are also indirectly giving the parents an opportunity to seamlessly pursue livelihood opportunities, especially for women who are primary care-givers.

Challenge

JCT’s initial need assessment had shown that most of the children from the urban slum community of Asalpha had low-learning skills, and were not adequately equipped to meet the demands of the school curriculum. This could potentially lead to school dropout, and push them into child-labor.

Additionally, the average monthly income of the families in this slum falls between Rs 8000-12000. In the absence of extended family support and safe care, mothers are often forced to leave the job which drastically reduces the family income. In case they continue working, children accompany their mothers to the work site, and are left unattended without supervision. They are often at high risk of being trapped into child labour.

Solution

JCT’s pre-primary institution tries to lay the foundation of early learning capacities and prepare them for higher school education. Within the curriculum they are provided with training and learning materials though verbal, visual and hands-on methods, the medium being English by qualified instructors. The children are also provided with school uniform, bags, books and basic school supplies. They have a play area for recreational activities. To monitor the progress, children are classified & assessed according to their age groups into Nursery (Play Group), Junior KG or Senior KG.

The safe learning environment provided by JCT gives young parents an opportunity to continue their work and enhance their financial standing.
